Signals’
tower
Positioned on the top of the village, near the old part,
has medieval origins; once was part of a castle built in
12th century. Actually is property of the municipality,
that will restore this ancient monument

The
old part
The buildings of the old part are built with terracotta
bricks and sandstone. Old part planning is composed by little
blocks arranged in a circle around old castle area, were
today there is the tower. In medieval era the village was
surrounded by a wall; now you can see a little part of it,
near the parish church.

Saint
Silverio's church
Positioned in front of the parish church dedicated to Saint Agata,
Saint Silverio’s church was parish too till 1914, with own
priest and benefits. Since 1755 became general quarter of Saint
Michael’s brotherhood.

Agata's church
The actual parish of Viarigi was founded in 1571. Built in late
medieval style, has three naves with brick columns and cube-shaped
capitals. The main altar is covered with coloured marbles.

Saint
Marziano's church
Is a very little church placed on the top of a hill in a lovely
countryside giving many typical products like apples, pears, cherries,
hazelnuts and many variety of grape. This church is one of the
most ancient monuments in the county of Asti; was built in Romanesque
style, probably in the 5th century. Its apse presents many pagan
symbols turned to orient. Actually is private property, but every
year, the last Saturday of August, gives hospitality to a classic
music concert.

Father
Luigi Variara
Priest of Salesian congregation, was born in Viarigi in 1875,
and died in Cucuta, Colombia, in 1923. He moved very young to
Latin America. When he was 30, in 1905,in Agua de Dios, he founded
the congregation called “Daughters of the holy hearts of
Jesus and Virgin Mother”, operating still today in ten countries:
Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Brazil,
Mexico, Guinea, Spain and Italy. Father Variara’s nuns continue
the work started by the founder supporting poor, leprous and social
outcasts. This congregation runs schools, hospitals and youth
clubs. Recently father Variara has been proclaimed blessed by
the Pope, John Paul II.

Saltinpiazza
Every year, the first Sunday of June, our village is peacefully
invaded by jugglers, acrobats, musicians, magicians, puppet showmen,
ballad singers and stilt walkers making a big theatre in the open
air, surrounded by painters, handicraftsmen, collectors and itinerant
sellers. This event has a big public successful. You may also
taste wine and other typical products. Entrance is free.

"La
Margherita" riding school
Horse is one of the best friends of man, and like a man
is a very sensitive animal. The staff of “La Margherita”
riding school will teach you how becoming friend of the horses
and understanding their language. Expert trainers will give you
individual lessons: at the beginning you will learn to establish
a feeling with the horse; then, step by step you will ride it
and, once you are sure, has come the moment to ride your new friend
without teachers, and having a nice riding through Monferrato’s
wonderful hills.

What

Festival
delle sagre (in Asti)
From 1974, every year, the second weekend of September, “Festival
delle Sagre” is one of the most successful events in Piedmont.
Almost 200,000 people taste foods cooked by more of 40 “Pro
Loco” (associations promoting area’s culture, eno-gastronomy
and folklore); every “Pro Loco” belongs to a village,
and offer to visitors the best of its traditional cooking in little
houses reproducing old country houses. You may also taste typical
wines. Food distribution starts at Saturday night and continues
Sunday morning, while Asti is peacefully invaded by a big passing
of men, women and children playing their grand parents’
lives, wearing their clothes, working with their old tools, driving
their old cars and tractors, riding their animals. “Festival
delle Sagre”: a big chance to spend a happy day with family
or friends, spending a few money.

Palio
di Asti (in Asti)
Palio is a horserace having medieval origins; in fact chronicles
mention the first edition in 1275. Every year, the 3rd Sunday
of September, 21 horses belonging to the districts of Asti and
the villages of its area compete to gain a flag, called Palio.
In 1936 Palio was cancelled; after a long period was reintroduced
in 1967: at the beginning was raced in Palio’s Field Square,
and lately, from 1988, moved to Alfieri Square.

Douja
d'Or (in Asti)
Wine is the best ambassador of Asti and its county in the world.
To pay homage to wine, every year, in the month of September (during
the same period of grape harvest and “Festival delle Sagre”),
Asti organise “Douja d’Or”, a Kermesse where
you may taste and buy every kind of wine from all over the world.

Truffle's
fair (in Alba city)
“Truffle is a smell, the fair celebrates its land”.
Who lives in Alba love using this sentence to describe the most
famous typical product of the area, and the most famous fair dedicated
to “tuber magnatum pico”, Latin name of Alba’s
white truffle. Every weekend of October, Alba celebrates its eno-gastronomy
with a fair called “Albaqualità”: in its stands
more of 200 farms show their products. At the entrance, visitors
will be received by tasting of wine and other typical products.
